Crowns
There are situations in which the most ideal treatment for a tooth is to restore it with a crown. When grinding, or decay, or fractures have obliterated too much tooth structure, an onlay or a filling may not be enough support for the tooth.
A crown will cover the entire crown, or part of tooth exposed in the mouth. Crowns fit over the whole tooth, so it is necessary to make the existing tooth smaller for the crown to fit on top of it. Crowns are made out of all gold, all ceramic, or it can have a base of gold with ceramic on top. Deciding which type of crown is right for you is a decision you make with your dentist.
A crown usually takes two appointments. The first we prepare the tooth, and we take an impression that we will send to the lab, then we will make a temporary crown. In two weeks the crown will be ready, and we will permanently cement it into place.
