Dr. Thomson maintained a private practice in New York City for two years after graduating from dental school. Dr. Thomson held a faculty position at the Columbia University School of Dentistry, and then at the University of Pennsylvania Dental School. She joined Capitol Hill Dental Group in 1988 and became a partner in 1990.

Dr. Thomson is a member of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, American Dental Society, the DC Dental Society and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Thomson lives in Virginia with her husband Barrie Tron, and her two children, Zoe, and Ted.
