Sealants
Sealants are a thin plastic material painted then bonded to the chewing surface of permanent molars and premolars. They are highly effective in preventing cavities. Scientific studies have found that properly placed sealants are 100% effective in protecting tooth surfaces from decay.
It acts as a physical barrier to bacteria, the level of protection is based on the sealants ability to adhere to the tooth and remain intact. The best time to do sealants are when the tooth erupts in the oral cavity. The six year molars erupt between six and seven years old, then the premolars and twelve year molars can erupt any time between ten and thirteen.
Sealants are completely safe and do not harm the tooth in any way. Studies have shown that teeth that have had and lost sealants over time are no more susceptible to tooth decay than teeth that were never sealed. Sealants should last 5 years, but can last up to ten years.
Sealants are most beneficial for children who have newly erupted teeth. These teeth have very deep pits and grooves, which can easily collect food and debris, causing decay very quickly. It is a very easy procedure to perform. The tooth is cleaned and dried. The material is painted on and hardened with a light.
